HeForShe
March 2015 – May 2016

The HeForShe team at UN Women presented their campaign to an auditorium of Columbia students in February 2015. They pointed out that sexism hurts both men and women, and encouraged us to invite male participation in conversations about gender. But at that early stage, UN Women had no definite plans to keep students engaged.
I built the HeForShe Columbia campus chapter from scratch to mobilize students. Over the next year, we accomplished a great deal:
Held bi-weekly general meetings for 20-30 students
Hosted panels addressing girls’ education with speakers from Clinton Global Initiative, Girl Rising, and World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts
Participated in official UN Women events like HeForShe Arts Week and the Global Ideathon to End Gender-Based Violence at Twitter HQ.
HeForShe Columbia now fields questions about its structure, programming, and strategy from student chapters across the globe. The chapter maintains a close relationship with UN Women.
